Press ReleaseTouro College For Immediate Release Dinner in Miami Beach Celebrates Opening of Touro College SouthMiami Beach, Fla. , November 10, 2006 - Almost three hundred people joined together on Sunday evening, October 29, to celebrate the opening of Touro College South (TCS), a branch campus of Touro College. Touro College is the largest and fastest-growing educational institution under Jewish auspices in the United States. The inaugural and celebratory dinner took place at TCS's new facility in Miami Beach. When Touro College South opened its doors this fall, the College already had more than 70 students from South Florida, Latin America and elsewhere enrolled in its undergraduate women's and men's divisions. Plans are underway to begin offering graduate courses in psychology and education. Sunday's dinner honored seven individuals who have been instrumental in bringing Touro College to South Florida. Special presentations were made to Daniel D. Cantor, Charles B. Ganz, Merv and Elaine Jacobs, Sisel Klurman, Keith Wasserstrom and Lucille Wiedman for their ongoing efforts on behalf of the new school. Mr. Ganz serves as chairman of the Touro College South advisory board. The keynote speaker for the evening was Dr. Dov S. Zakheim, vice president of Booz Allen Hamilton, a global strategy and technology consulting firm. Dr. Zakheim served as the undersecretary of defense and chief financial officer for the Department of Defense until April 2004. "The many rabbis, educators and communal leaders who attended the event reflect the broad support and excitement already generated by the College in South Florida," noted Vice President Rabbi Alan G. Ciner. Dr. Bernard Lander, Founder and President of Touro College, addressed the gathering, highlighting the mission of Touro College since its inception 36 years ago. Dr. Lander emphasized the important role to be played by Touro College South in strengthening the growing Jewish community of South Florida, and his expectation that the new school in Miami Beach would serve the educational needs of the Jewish communities of Latin America. Calanit Paz, a student from Chile, spoke warmly and appreciatively at the dinner of the opportunities afforded her at Touro College South. Dr. Lander expressed his gratitude to all of the evening's honorees for their vision and commitment to the success of Touro in South Florida. He noted the special role played by Sisel Klurman and her late husband, Abba Shmuel, in the birth of Touro College close to 40 years ago. Dr. Lander also expressed his appreciation to Rabbi Ciner, Hillel Abramson, Ph.D., dean of academic affairs and student services, and Marcia Werbin, director of development, for their hard work and leadership.
