VOLUNTEER FACULTY AND STUDENTS FROM TOURO COLLEGE OF PHARMACY OFFER FREE SEASONAL FLU VACCINES TO HARLEM COMMUNITY

Khwaja Baksh, right, of Harlem, rolls up his sleeve to receive his free seasonal flu shot from Dr. Ronnie Moore, director of practice experience, at Touro College of Pharmacy, at Iris House in Harlem. This year marks the first time that pharmacists are allowed to administer flu shots to adults 18 and older in New York state. Volunteer faculty and student pharmacists from the College of Pharmacy in Harlem administered vaccines throughout the community during Harlem Influenza Awareness Week ( October 17-23), and the New York Academy of Medicine’s Project Viva (October 27 and 28). Dr. Stuart Feldman, dean of the Touro College of Pharmacy, explained that flu vaccine clinics such as these are a necessity in communities where vaccines are in short supply or where cost is prohibitive. In addition, he said, no appointments are needed, offering greater accessibility. Touro College of Pharmacy, which opened its doors in September 2008, is the first school of pharmacy to open in New York in 68 years. The College is dedicated to increasing educational opportunities in Harlem and serving the Harlem community.
