New York, N.Y., July 21, 2009 - Dr. Bernard Lander, president and founder of Touro College, is pleased to announce that the college is participating in the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program (Yellow Ribbon Program).
Under the program, Touro will award scholarships to up to 25 veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The program is available at many of Touro College’s undergraduate and graduate programs at its campuses in the U.S.
With approximately 17,500 students, Touro College is educating students at over two dozen schools in four states. The schools that are participating in the Yellow Ribbon Program are located in New York (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island); Nevada (Henderson); and Florida (Miami Beach).
The Yellow Ribbon Program is a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008. The program allows colleges to match dollar-for-dollar the federal government’s contribution to veterans’ educational costs beyond benefits provided through the GI Bill.

The program allows colleges and universities in the U.S. to enter into agreements with the VA to fund tuition expenses that exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate. Touro College will contribute 25 percent toward tuition, up to $9,825.00, and the VA will match this amount.
Individuals are eligible if they served an aggregate period of active duty after September 10, 2001, of at least 36 months; they were honorably discharged from active duty for a service- connected disability and they served 30 continuous days after September 10, 2001; or they are a dependent eligible for Transfer of Entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill based on a veteran’s service under the eligibility criteria listed above.
“We owe our war veterans the very best when they return home, and access to quality education should be at the top of the list,” said Carol Rosenbaum, executive director of compliance and financial aid at Touro. “We are so pleased to offer scholarships to these courageous women and men who risked their lives for our country.”
In addition to the Yellow Ribbon program, Touro’s School of Health Sciences is also offering scholarships to individuals who have actively served in any branch of the U.S. Armed services at anytime and who meet the admissions requirements for the Physician Assistant (PA) program. The scholarships are available to two students per class, and are based on need for those who meet the academic requirements. Touro will award scholarships for any amount not covered by financial aid, or state or grant funding.
The School of Health Sciences offers two different Physician Assistant programs that are administered independently of one another, each having a unique focus and curriculum design. The Bay Shore Campus Physician Assistant Program is based at the School of Health Sciences’ campus in Bay Shore, Long Island, and has an extension center at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola. The Bay Shore program is a 24-month, six-semester, dual-degree graduate program culminating in a bachelor’s in health sciences and a master’s in physician assistant studies. The Manhattan Campus Physician Assistant Program, based at the midtown Manhattan campus, is a 32-month, dual-degree, graduate program also culminating in a bachelor’s in health sciences and a master’s in physician assistant studies.
