TOURO COLLEGE GRANTED APPROVAL TO OFFER DOCTOR OF PHARMACY PROGRAM

New York, N.Y. - August 6, 2008 -

Dr. Bernard Lander, founder and president of Touro College, today announced approval from the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to offer a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.) program. In addition, the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), the agency for accreditation of professional pharmacy degree programs, has granted Touro College of Pharmacy pre-candidate status.

"Our innovative pharmacy program will be housed in modern, state-of-the-art facilities in the New York City community of Harlem," said Dr. Lander. "The curriculum will prepare graduates to practice and provide patient care in a variety of settings."

Touro College of Pharmacy, which will be the only pharmacy program in Manhattan, will enroll its first class in October 2008. Among other requirements a prerequisite for admission is a bachelor’s degree. The four year program will confer the Doctor of Pharmacy degree.

"The rationale for establishing a new pharmacy program in Harlem is the compelling need for a diverse health care workforce that serves underserved populations, said Dr. Stuart Feldman, the founding dean. "Our program will educate the next generation of pharmacists on issues of health disparities among the diverse populations we serve."

Research from the Institute of Medicine, the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Commonwealth Fund suggests differences in treatment and health care outcomes based on race, culture and ethnicity, Dr. Feldman added. The disparities arise from many factors: differences in socio-economic status; differences in behavior of those seeking care and adhering to treatments; a lack of sensitivity on the part of providers; language barriers; insurance deficiencies; and lack of diversity in the healthcare workforce, he said.

"The College of Pharmacy will reflect the values of Touro College and serve society through programs in pharmacy education, research and scholarship, and by service to the community and the profession," Dr. Feldman said. "The faculty and administrators hired to date are committed to providing an exceptional learning environment for our students and developing strong, collaborative ties to the community."
