Touro Awards 684 Degrees at 35th Commencement

NEW YORK, N.Y., June 12, 2009 - Touro College recognized 684 candidates for graduation at its 35th annual commencement exercises on May 25th.

The ceremonies, held at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall, awarded 578 baccalaureate, seven master’s and 99 associate degrees. The graduates receiving degrees were from several schools at Touro that are dedicated to perpetuating the Jewish heritage and Jewish continuity: Lander College of Arts and Sciences in Flatbush; Lander College for Men in Queens; Lander College for Women-The Anna Ruth and Mark Hasten School in Manhattan; the School for Lifelong Education; Machon L’Parnasa; and the Graduate School of Jewish Studies.

In his keynote address, Touro College President Bernard Lander exhorted the graduates to stand firm in their convictions and Torah values, always to look forward, and to reach higher in accomplishing their goals and in actively serving the Jewish community and the world.

Valedictories were presented by four students: Esther Adler and Pesach Schorr, from the Lander College for Arts & Sciences - Flatbush; Rachel Friedman, from the Lander College for Women-The Anna Ruth and Mark Hasten School; and Gabriel Aaronson from the Lander College for Men - Queens.

By the end of the commencement season, Touro College expects to have awarded 5,588 doctor of philosophy, doctor of osteopathic medicine, juris doctor, master’s, baccalaureate and associate degrees in fields as wide-ranging as law, education, health sciences, and finance.

Founded in 1971, Touro College has experienced phenomenal growth and currently is educating approximately 17,500 students at locations in New York, California, Florida, Nevada, Jerusalem, Moscow, Berlin and Paris.
