FAQ: Registration Questions

What is a credit? How many do I need?
A credit is a unit of measurement that generally means one contact hour of classroom time per week per semester (a typical semester is 15 or 16 weeks long). A 3-credit course should be roughly 45 semester hours. (Remember, an academic hour is normally calculated at 50 minutes.) Registering for twelve (12) credits makes you a full-time student. Anything less is considered part-time.
What is a prerequisite?
A prerequisite is a course that must be taken before, or in preparation for, a more advanced course. Contact the Registrar if you have specific questions regarding prerequisites.
What about corequisite requirements in the schedule?
A corequisite is a course or requirement that must be taken during the same semester as another course. An example would be science lectures and their corresponding laboratories.
What if I do not have the prerequisites for the class I want?
Waivers of perquisites for specific classes can only be granted by the dean.
How can I get into a closed class?
A closed class means the class section is full (no more seats are available). Enrollment in a closed class is normally not possible. A class may reopen if a student drops the class during registration.
How many credits should I take if I'm working?
Many counselors recommend that if you are working 40 hours per week, you probably should not take more than eight credits, or about two courses. If you are working 15 to 20 hours per week, you may be able to handle a full load of 12 credits or more. Remember that for every hour in class, you can expect to spend two hours in study and preparation.
How do I apply for financial aid?
Financial aid programs have different requirements. Check with the Financial Aid Office. Almost all financial aid programs require students to be registered full-time.
Who can change grades?
It is the responsibility of your instructor to determine your grade for a class – see Grades & Academic Concerns FAQ. Grade appeals should first be made to the instructor, then if necessary, addressed to the relevant department chairperson.
Can a grade be removed from my transcript?
As per Touro College policy, a student’s transcript must show all courses taken and grades received (except course dropped during the first two weeks of the Fall or Spring semesters and the designated add-drop period of summer sessions).
If a student believes that exceptional circumstances apply, he/she may file a petition with the Committee on Academic Standing (CAS) requesting that a retroactive withdrawal from a course be granted. Please consult your advisor for more details.
