FAQ: Dropping Courses
- Is it too late to drop my class?
You can drop any course with no course entry shown on your transcript prior to the end of the second week of the fall and spring semester, or the first few days of summer session (check our academic calendar for specific dates). After the second week, through the eighth week, you can drop the course with the notation of “W” on your transcript. To drop a course, you must complete an add-drop form in person and submit it to the Registrar. (Because dropping courses can affect financial aid, you are urged to consult with that office before dropping a course.)
- What if it’s after the 8th week?
After the 8th week of the term, withdrawals are only permitted when there are extenuating personal or medical circumstances, which must be documented.
- If it is too late to drop, what happens if I stop going anyway?
Students who stop attending courses during the first 8 weeks of the semester and do not follow these withdrawal procedures will receive a grade of WU for the course. Students who stop attending after the first eight weeks will receive a letter grade for the course; in many cases this will be an F. It is best to consult your instructor before dropping.
- If I never attend class, will I automatically be dropped?
Students receive a WNA grade in classes that they have never attended (without filing the appropriate form). A grade of WNA (Withdrawal-Never Attended) is not computed in your grade point average but does appear on your transcript.
- What if I cannot attend every class session?
It is important to talk to your instructor about absences. Many instructors factor attendance into your grade calculation.
- When is it too late for a tuition refund?
Should you drop ALL your classes during the first week of the semester, you will receive a 90 percent refund. During the second week, you will receive a 75 percent refund, during the third week, 50%, the fourth week, 25%, and after the fourth week, no refund can be expected. College and course fees are not refundable.
Refunds are given for individual courses dropped prior to the beginning of a given semester, and that you never attended. During the semester, if you drop individual classes, but are still registered for and attending other classes, there will be NO REFUND.
Please consult the Bursar for additional details.
