Degree Requirements...

Men's classes are scheduled for Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 P.M. to 10:30 P.M. Laboratory sections for natural science courses meet on Sunday afternoons and evenings. Selected additional courses are offered on Sunday evening.

Typically, most students register for 12 or 13 credits per semester at Touro while also earning 6 college credits on permit for their yeshiva studies. During the regular summer session, which last five weeks, students may complete seven credits. A double summer session is usually offered at Touro in Flatbush enabling students to accelerate their progress toward a degree.

Students may earn up to 48 college credits for post-high school yeshiva studies, pursued in Israel or in the United States. Credits are awarded both for work completed prior to admission to Touro College, as well as while enrolled at the College. To receive credits, students must submit to the College and official yeshiva transcript with grades for evaluation. No credit will be given for courses completed with a grade below "C". Please note that students are limited to a maximum load of 18 credits per semester including yeshiva credits.

The awarding of credit for yeshiva studies is based solely on Touro College academic policies. The credit values assigned to courses by Touro College may not coincide with credit values listed on a yeshiva transcript.

In order to graduate, students must satisfy all degree requirements as set forth in the Touro College Bulletin. Requirements include the following:

1. Completing 120 credits with an overall grade point average of a least 2.00 (C);

2. Completing all prescribed courses in the major field with an overall average of 2.33 (C+) or better;

3. Satisfying the Core Course Requirements of the College;

4. Satisfying the 48 Judaic Studies requirements, including 24 credits of Intensive Talmud. Generally this requires four years of post high school Yeshiva studies.

5. Completing a minimum residency requirement of 45 credits and completing at least 50% of the major at Touro College.

6. Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree must complete 90 credits in liberal arts and science courses; 60 liberal arts credits are required for the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. Judaic studies classes are considered liberal arts. Other liberal arts courses include biology, economics, history, introductory courses in computer science, languages, literature, mathematics, political science and psychology.

Effective writing skills are essential for success in any career or profession. Students are required to take up to three semester of English Composition at Touro College unless exempted by a placement examination. Since English Composition is a core requirement, students are expected to register for it during their first semester at the College.

Students who have earned composition credits with a grade of "C" or better at another accredited college prior to enrolling at Touro also must take a placement examination. Those students who are placed into English composition II will receive up to six transfer credits for prior work; those students who are placed into English Composition I will receive three transfer credits for prior work.

In order to develop oral communication skills, Touro requires students to complete a three-credit speech course as part of their undergraduate curriculum.

Students are also expected to demonstrate proficiency in quantitative skills. A mathematics placement examination is administered at orientation. Students who place into College Mathematics (the lowest level mathematics course) must take this course during their freshman year.

Honors are awarded at graduation to students with outstanding scholastic records are reflected in the overall grade point average.

Honor societies with chapters at the Flatbush Campus include Alpha Chi (general academic excellence) and Omicron Delta Epsilon (the International Honor Society in Economics and Business).

With departmental permission, students may complete a Senior Honors Project in their major.
