Touro provides advisement and guidance in helping students map out their academic program and to make the right career decisions. The Advisement and Counseling Service Office assists students in exploring their interests, identifying career options and choosing a major. Various instruments and tests are utilized to supplement individual one-on-one counseling sessions. The staff also provides confidential personal guidance.
At registration, as well as during the semester, departmental advisors help students to select appropriate courses in order to satisfy all degree requirements.
Tutoring in selected fields such as mathematics and the natural sciences is provided as a free service by a staff of peer tutors and graduates of Touro.
Students interested in pursuing graduate degrees in such fields as business (MBA), computer science, education and special education, health sciences, law, medicine and dentistry, psychology or speech therapy are counseled regarding all steps of the application process, including the required admission tests, and are given guidance in selecting appropriate professional schools.
Career placement specialists provide job counseling and assist students seeking internships, part-time and full-time employment. They conduct workshops and help students to develop effective job search skills, particularly in such areas as researching the job market, resume preparation and interviewing strategies.
Student Activities

xtra-curricular activities enhance the classroom learning experience in a variety of ways: they enable students to develop their leadership and interpersonal skill, to hone communication skills, to gain a better understanding of their career field and to sharpen their competitive edge for a challenging employment market.Student organizations and academic societies at the Flatbush Campus include The Accounting & Business Society, The Computer Science Society, The Psychology Club, The Touro Investment Club, The Health Science/Pre-Medical Society, and the Pre-Law Association. These societies bring guest lecturers to the campus and publish scholarly student journals.
The official newspaper of the Flatbush Campus is The Touro Transcript. Students also publish periodically various newsletters.
Internships
T
ouro maintains an active internship program. If you are serious about your future you should consider taking advantage of the many challenging internship opportunities available in New York city. An internship will enable you to explore a particular career field, to acquire the work experience that many employers seek and to create a resume that truly stands out. Many Touro students have received offers of full-time employment after completing an internship.Students interested in securing an internship should contact the Office of Career Placement. Additional assistance is available through the Department of Political Science (government internships) and the Department of Biology (science research internships). With the approval of their department, students may earn college credits for internship experiences.
In recent years Touro business and computer science majors have held internships at C.S. First Boston, Citicorp, Prudential Securities, Salomon Smith Barney, Merrill Lynch, Lazard Freres, Morgan Stanley, Dean Witter Reynolds, ING Barings, Deloitte & Touche, Goldman Sachs, Chase Manhattan Bank, SONY, EMI/Capital Records, IBM, Republic National Bank, and Metropolitan Life. Touro pre-law students have interned in the Capitol Hill Offices of Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Senator Joseph Lieberman, Senator Frank Lautenberg, Senator Charles Schumer, and with various New York State Assemblymen and New York City Council Members.
Touro pre-medical/pre-dental students have served as interns at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, Mount Sinai, Cornell University Medical Center, Methodist Hospital and Maimonides Hospital.
Each year, the Office of Career Placement organizes a Career Forum which brings to the campus leaders from a variety of companies who present information about career opportunities and job market trends. Since the 1994 academic year, the College has annually hosted an On-Campus Recruitment Fair with representatives from accounting firms, banks and brokerage houses, insurance companies, and government and social services agencies.
The Alumni Office
The Alumni Office maintains communication with graduates of the College, publishes Alma Matters (an alumni newsletter), and organizes various alumni events. Students who would like to receive career guidance from alumni in various professional fields should contact Ms. Susan Stern, Coordinator of Alumni Affairs.
Services for Students with Disabilities
Touro College complies with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, which protects persons from discrimination on the basis of physical or mental impairments for all educational and employment purposes. Assistance is available for students who have physical or learning-related disabilities. Disabled students should contact the Office of the Dean of Students (exts. 419 or 420) at the start of every semester to discuss their needs and problems. The Office of the Dean of Students will make appropriate referrals for special accommodations or services.
Health Insurance
Touro College offers the SENTRY STUDENT SECURITY PLAN to its students on a voluntary basis. Any full or part-time domestic student who is registered at Touro College is eligible to enroll, as well as spouses and dependents. The plan provides limited reimbursement for specific medical charges directly arising from accident or sickness (excluding any "pre-existing conditions"), as well as Major Medical Benefit. A brochure is available in the Office of the Dean of Students.
Touro College offers this plan as a service to students who, for whatever reason, do not have any other medical insurance coverage . The Sentry Plan is not a substitute for comprehensive health coverage the students may be eligible for under their parents' plan and the College recommends that students investigate this possibility before proceeding with Sentry or any other plan. Touro College does not receive any compensation for offering this plan.
Dental Plan
Touro College offers the STU-DENT DENTAL PLAN to its students on voluntary basis. Stu-Dent, designed to meet the basic dental health needs of college students and their dependents, is provided through the David B. Kriser Dental Center of New York University (located at 345 East 24th Street). For an annual fee of $125, student receive basic services in the areas of preventive care (semi-annual cleaning and oral hygiene instruction), diagnostic care (semi-annual oral exam and x-rays), restorative treatment (fillings), and discounts on additional services at the Center. Brochures are available in the Office of the Dean of Students.
Touro College offers this plan as a service to students who, for whatever reason, do not have any other access to dental coverage at an affordable price. Touro College does not receive any compensation for offering this plan.
