Important message for students re: grade 5-9 certification
Students who enter the Middle School, Generalist, Grades 5-9, and Students with Disabilities, Generalist, Grades 5-9, program after the spring 2011 semester will be eligible for Middle Childhood, Generalist, Grades 5-9, certification but will not be eligible for Students with Disabilities, Generalist, Grades 5-9 certification.
All students admitted into our grades 5-9 program in the Spring 2011 semester or earlier will be eligible for both the General Education and Students with Disabilities 5-9 certifications. The New York State Education Department is giving those students about five years to complete their program and apply for certification. The certifications will stand even though NYSED is phasing out the Disabilities, Generalist, Grades 5-9, certification; in other words, your earned 5-9 disabilities certification will not be effected by this.
Touro is hoping to soon offer a new Students with Disabilities, Generalist, Grades 7-12 program, which will lead to state certification at the SWD, Generalist, Grades 7-12 level.
All students who are certified in early childhood education, birth-grade 2, and childhood education, grades 1-6, can add students with disabilities, generalist, grades 5-9, certification only up until August 31, 2011, after which NYSED will no longer accept applications to add students with disabilities, generalist, grades 5-9, certification on to an existing certification. Students already taking classes for an extension in this area must apply to NYSED for their extension by August 31, 2011.
