Important Notice on Students with Disabilities Certification in a Grade 7-12 Subject Area
Touro College has been notified by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) that teachers certified in a subject area at the grade 7-12 level (such as in mathematics, English, Biology, etc.) can no longer add students with disabilities certification to that subject area certification as of September 1, 2011. Instead, all teachers in this situation who wish to earn disabilities certification at the grade 7-12 level must earn the new certification in students with disabilities, generalist, grades 7-12.
To add the new students with disabilities, generalist, grades 7-12, certification to an existing grade 7-12 certification in a subject area, the same four special education courses are completed as in the past -- SpEd602, EdSE640, SpEd672 (rather than SpEd670 or SpEd671), and SpEd635. Anyone who holds a 7-12 subject area certification should already have completed 6 credits in grade 7-12 education coursework and 6 credits in literacy, which are also required for certification in students with disabilities, generalist, grades 7-12. NYSED will check to determine if you have completed six credits at the 7-12 grade level, 6 credits in literacy, and six credits each in the liberal arts and sciences subject areas of mathematics, science, English, and social studies. A passing grade on the CST-Students with Disabilities and completion of the 3-hour autism workshop are also required. In addition, NYSED will check transcripts to determine you have completed six credits at the 7-12 grade level, 3 credits in literacy, and six credits each in the liberal arts and sciences subject areas of mathematics, science, English, and social studies. A passing grade on the CST-Students with Disabilities and the 3-hour autism workshop are also required
