LaMar P. Miller is a nationally recognized educator. He was formerly the Executive Director of the Metropolitan Center for Urban Education at New York University which he founded in 1978. At NYU he was a Professor of Education, a Steinhardt Distinguished Fellow and served as a Chair of the Secondary Education Department. At the Metro Center he created programs to address the issues of underserved populations in education, government, schools and districts that serve them and raised approximately 100 million dollars from federal, state, local, and private resources.
Dr. Miller has been involved in the educational research community for many years and conducted numerous investigations. Most notable are his contributions to the study and examination of 1954 “Brown V” Topeka Supreme Court decision thru four decennial National Conferences including 2004 “Brown Plus Fifty”. He is a member of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) having held a number of offices. Dr. Miller has received numerous awards for his work as a researcher and scholar including the distinguished scholar award for his role in creating the special interest group, “Research Focus on Black Education”. He represented AERA as a member of the Executive Board of the Federation of Behavioral, Psychological and Cognitive Sciences. At the United States Department of Education he was the chief architect and director of a program to prepare and increase the number of minorities and women in educational research.
He has written numerous articles and books which include The Testing of Black Students; Equality of Educational Opportunity; Brown vs. Board of Education; The Application of Research into Practice; Brown Plus Thirty; Brown Plus Forty and Brown Plus Fifty.
Dr. Miller joined the faculty of Touro College in 2006. He has led the development of the new Ed.D Program in Educational Administration and Instructional Leadership and established the Lander Center for Educational Research. Dr. Miller is a native of Michigan and received his BA from Eastern Michigan University, Masters and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. |
